Criminal justice professionals play a crucial role in promoting safer roads through the effective handling of DWI cases. Research has shown that subsequent DWI offenders have a considerable rate of substance abuse and/or mental health needs. These statistics point to the importance of considering DWI offenders’ behavioral and mental health concerns during the sentencing and the supervising process.
Thus, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation, has developed a DWI criminal justice professionals training about mental health and referral practices in DWI cases.
